Behind the design - Pāʻū o Hiʻiaka, Jacquemontia sandwicensis
Pāʻū o Hiʻiaka is an endemic coastal vine. This vine can be found in sandy or salty soil on primarily the leeward coastal habitats of the Hawaiian Islands. It has tiny, delicate, pale blue to white flowers that bloom year round, peaking between December-July, and ovate leaves.
It's name translates to the Skirt of Hiʻiaka. Hiʻiaka (Hiʻiakaikapoliopele) is the younger sister of the fire goddess Pele. The moʻolelo goes, Hiʻiaka was waiting on the beach for Pele to finish surfing. When Pele returned to shore she found her sister sleeping with this vine draped over her, protecting her from the sun.
*Design improvements:
Raffia is a biodegradable, compostable, and plant-based product derived from the Raffia Palm, and is harvested in a way that doesn't harm the plant. As a precaution, please remove raffia from lei before releasing them into the ocean, as it takes time for the product to break down.
